Hooters, the restaurant chain known more for its buxom waitresses than its chicken wings, fries and beer is looking to bring its “delightfully tacky yet unrefined”–that’s their slogan–dining experience to Turkey, India and Japan.

Those countries are some of the new markets the casual dining franchise will target in an expansion plan announced Thursday that would increase new restaurant locations by at least 15% to 20% annually for the next several years.

Hooters is expanding as the number of U.S. restaurants overall is shrinking amid high unemployment and a sluggish economy. According to a recent report by market research company The NPD Group, roughly 5,000 restaurants, or 1%, closed this spring compared to the same period last year, mostly independently owned operations.

Hooters, which has over 455 chains worldwide in 29 foreign countries, hired Colliers International to identify new locations and negotiate lease agreements.

“The goal is to double the footprint over the next five years,” says Patrick Duffy, chairman of Colliers Retail Services Group. He said the Hooters concept has been “transportable” overseas and that Shanghai is one of their most successful restaurants.

Hooters said their ideal locations range between 3,000 and 5,000 square feet and “typically boast retail, office, hotel, tourism, festival, urban and industrial traffic drivers.”

BUFFALO-There’s a new beer in town, and it’s aiming to perfect the chicken wings and beer combo.

The Buffalo Water Beer Company started in Milwaukee in 2007 at the corner of Buffalo and Water streets in the city. What the founders didn’t realize was that they also had the perfect name on their hands.

From the name came the goal: to create the perfect beer to go with “Buffalo” Chicken Wings.

After tasting, tweaking and perfecting their formula, founder Craig Peterson was on the road Thursday showing off his final product. He’s taking “Buffalo Water Beer” to restaurants in the area, including the Anchor Bar, to gauge reaction and try to get some distributors.

“If you have a beer that’s too hoppy, too dark, that’s too thick and rich, it doesn’t really put the fire out of REAL Buffalo wings,” Peterson said. “I’m talking about real Buffalo wings with the hot sauce, not the stuff you find at the commercial places with the honey, barbecue and the sesame seeds on it.”

Peterson hopes to have the beer available for purchase in September.

What I was trying to do as I drove was find out how far up into Ontario the foodie thing extended. The truth is that it never goes away.

But a lot of people in Toronto had predicted it ended in North Bay, at a restaurant called Moose’s, where they sold 102 flavours of chicken wings.

I cannot say I was looking forward to the experience. You can get tired of eating.

You pull into North Bay, which is full of interesting people but does not present well, if you know what I mean, you see the Bull and Quench pub, ‘Home of the 1 lb burger’ – think about that – and Indra’s Curry House, next to the Heart and Stroke Foundation office.

You think: Maybe this is my last day on earth. Maybe this is where my heart explodes.

ATLANTA (June  15, 2010) Church’s Chicken has added chicken wings to its menu, a spokeswoman for the 1,700-unit quick-service chicken chain said Monday.

Church’s Wild Wings come six to a serving and feature a choice of five sauces: Honey BBQ, Buffalo Hot, Buffalo Medium, Sweet & Spicy and Chili Lime. They are available in both boneless and traditional varieties and are priced at $2.99.

The chain is promoting the wings with a money-back guarantee, offering customers a refund if they are dissatisfied with the new product. Additionally, guests can sample two wings for $1 when they make any regular purchase, Church’s said.

“Our wings are called Ôwild’ for a reason, and we believe that our spin on this offering is one that our customers will enjoy,” said Tony Lavely, Church’s chief marketing officer.

The wing launch is the chain’s second addition to its menu in as many months. It introduced a strawberry shortcake dessert in April.
